Take your dreams to the next level!

When was the last time you took the chance to write yourself up a new career wish list? You owe it to yourself to own what you actually want (…not what you think the world wants of you). You’ll be amazed if you just sit down and get centered with yourself, and make some notes on what you might like to pursue for the next year, or handful of years, for your life. You have to give it just the time it takes to write it up (an hour?) and you’ll be off to a strong start …because the minute you start writing them down, you are starting to deliver a much more targeted message.

http://www.mediaintelligence.ca/career-goals-exercise/

Now, let’s “crunch” your goals… Print up your list, get a coloured marker and make some notes. For each item you’ve written down, do three things:

  • Determine on a scale of 1-10, how much/how badly you want each particular item. You can have as many 10s, 9s, 8s, 7s, etc., as you want. It’s up to you to assign a “weight” (read: priority) to each item.
  • Once you’ve done this, go through your list again, and assign/give each goal a short-term, mid-term, or long-term status.
  • Then, review your list one last time, and think about what your timelines might be for the short, mid, and long-term. BTW, only you can determine what short, mid and long-term mean. It’s your wish-list ..not your mother’s, not your partner or your brother’s list … Do yourself and your list proud. You’ll end up with a “chart” that will look something like this:

Short Term (6 months)

Update resume (10)

Get job in X doing Y (9)

Start new job search (6)

Get job in X doing Y (9)

Increase contacts (7)

etc.

Mid-Term (2017-2019)

Write a blog (10)

Take X course (9)

Network (7)

Complete all marketing materials for career (10)

etc.

Long-Term (2020+)

Financial stability (10)

Travel (7)

Start a business in X (7)

Volunteer in X (6)

etc.

Pro Tip 1: My goals list is pinned to my wall at eye level, just over my computer. At the beginning of each and every week, I take items from my short, mid and long-term goals and I schedule them into my calendar.

Mondays through Wednesdays are great job search/business development days, because everyone’s on the job, paying attention, actively doing business. By Thursday, people are in the thick of it, and starting to burn out. Typically on Fridays, people are “checked out”. So I always do the heavy lifting on my career/business Monday through Wednesdays. And because I know that on Thursdays people are starting to loose steam, I don’t try to do business/lead development on those days. I reserve Thursdays for creative development, like blogging, or working on product or my marketing pieces. Fridays are more of a “social” day in nature, so I reserve Fridays for networking, when people are happy to take a call or a coffee or lunch meeting…or, I take care of administrative tasks.

Pro Tip 2: Every year, religiously, on my birthday, I take the day to write up and “crunch” my new goals. And by scheduling my goals into my calendar every single week, I usually get them all done in a year!

In the next blog, we’ll start in on best practices for all the marketing materials you need for your career, from business cards to resumes, social media profiles, the whole package!

Keep doing your homework! Crunch those goals! And come back next week.

Carve some time every week for getting some your goals into the schedule, and you’ll start to get some real traction on what’s important to you.

Welcome to the mediaINTELLIGENCE Career Blog!

Wondering where to start actually managing your career?

We start at the beginning, and we go through the practical steps that help set us up for success in the marketplace. Do this program once, and you’ll have job search skills for life.

Here’s how it’s done: we’ll start at the beginning, establishing, scheduling and prioritizing goals, and look at best practices for building and managing your personal brand. Then, we look at “job search”, including exploring companies you want to work with by looking at their mandate; figuring out who, let alone how, to approach the hiring manager with confidence; and build a “business case” for you joining the company. We cover how to plan “marketing touchdowns” to get you in front of the right team, at the right time, for the right reasons, and take you from the dreaded “stranger status” to “known and respected entity”….

It is so do-able! And it is not rocket science. The trick lies in your (sustained) attention, and simply doing your homework. Note: in my experience, the biggest problem I see when it comes to careers is that people will just not focus and actually make a plan. Or, they do it in fits and starts (usually with their backs against the wall), instead of concertedly working through the steps to manage their brand and message, on a consistent basis.

The good news: I may be the only person to ever tell you that careers (read: all goals) are absolutely, completely achievable. Most people throw stuff at the wall all their life, and hope that something sticks. When you use that approach, your career is actually managing you. We need to turn this around, and put the power back in your hands.

Most job seekers turn to friends, peers or family for advice. Despite having your best interests at heart these well-meaning folk are not trained to help you self-actualize and very few of them know about the new employment rules, let alone, new employment tools… We’re looking for you to make more “truly informed” decisions, enhance your brand, and get you moving forward with confidence. And it doesn’t matter what age or stage you are at.

Please hear me when I say there is more opportunity out there than you can possibly imagine. The world is in a sorry state. There’s untold ways and places for you to apply your unique skills, knowledge and passion. Think about it:  if there is a problem in (any) business, it follows that there’s a business imperative to be solved, and an accompanying job (or role) to be had solving it. And yes, dammit, you’re allowed. Not only are you allowed to participate and shine in these new businesses, but you’ll actually be welcomed! Imagine that! You’ll be welcomed because you’ll have done your homework, and that will resonate quite positively (read: confidence) with decision-makers.

Now, to our “homework”… Let’s roll up our sleeves and get started. Leave your regular desk and regular thinking behind, grab your desktop, and go somewhere inspirational … A church? A bar? A park? (…or anything in between) …and do this exercise: http://www.mediaintelligence.ca/career-goals-exercise/

You owe it to yourself. Start by writing down what you want for yourself, not what you think the world wants of you. Don’t waste any more time trying to “think your way through it”. You need to write it down. Note: you need to move your career thoughts out of short term memory and into long term memory. And that’s exactly what happens when you write up your wish-list. Get serious for an hour and write down all the things you want, both professionally and personally. Let’s learn to take a leadership position on our wants and needs, and by doing so, we’ll make your professional reality more meaningful, let alone gainful!

In the next blog, we’ll take your goals to the next level. You’ll learn to “crunch/(do the analysis)” on them, and we’ll discuss how to prioritize and schedule your goals into your week, week over week. You’ll be off to a strong start, and will be delivering a much more targeted message. It’s nowhere near as hard as you think.

Pro Tip: Just do your homework. Get out your real wish list and have some fun with it!

Pay it forward! Re-post, or share and tag a friend or colleague through the buttons below!

Testimonials

We met months ago at Ryerson University when you came to present your Smart Start workshop for aspiring entrepreneurs. We took a lot away from your workshop and have used your presentation as a guide to draft our business plan. I really appreciate your encouragement for people to start their own businesses. Aly Burtch

I invited Michelle to speak to my Centennial College students about interviewing techniques. In December, I asked each student to recall something pivotal they learned in the course. A full third mentioned her session as being one of the most valuable moments in my class, calling it “informative and impactful”.  She gave a very dynamic presentation that the students thoroughly enjoyed, full of practical advice but also enthusiastic encouragement. Chanda Chevannes

I was part of the class that you spoke to today at Mohawk College, regarding Career Activism I wanted to say a huge thank you for coming out. A lot of what you said resonated with me and I now feel much more confident in taking control of my future. Connor Cassidy

I was one of the participants in the Hot Docs Doc Accelerator program — your Career Essentials session was really helpful and eye-opening. Althea Manasan

Great talk today at Humber College! I really enjoyed your presentation. There were some very useful tools to add to my portfolio. Patrick Castaldi

It was such a pleasure meeting you at the Loyalist College Career Fair. You were the highlight of my afternoon and I wanted to reach out to you to say thank you. You also talked about a spreadsheet file on how to access the hidden job market, that just blew my mind. I will stay in touch! Derek Buchanan

Thank you for your guidance and expertise – the work we’ve done has made SUCH a difference in my confidence level. I feel like I have a solid toolbox of skills and resources and 100% more business acumen than I had before I met you. I feel ready to get out there and go after what I want now! Linda Kerec

Interactive, engaging, and motivating! I have learned a lot of useful techniques and how to apply them to my small business promo as well as to my job search. Filip Piatrou

My only regret is that I didn’t meet with mediaINTELLIGENCE 10 years ago! Lisa Hemeon

Before we met, I wasn ́t getting ANY responses from employers. After putting my material together, with your suggestions, and changing my attitude, with your tips, employers started to contact me right away, and I finally found a full-time reporter position. You do an incredible job, and YOU DEFINITELY helped me! Flavio Sachett Nienow

Write Up Your Goals!

When was at the last time you wrote up a career wish-list? In fact, have you ever?

When you’re pro-actively planning and managing your career goals, you are no longer at the mercy of your industry, or the job market! Think about that for a minute! How cool would it be, if you could actually manage your career, rather than have it manage you? No more uncertainty, no more instability, no more throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks! A real plan, that has teeth!

mI helps you identify career goals that support your professional and personal values and aspirations. This career planning exercise will help you figure out the career path you want to pursue.

Challenge yourself to make a list of 12 goals you’d like to realize. Each statement should reflect your dream job or dream wishes… things you’d really like to do at this particular stage of your professional life. Add in some personal goals. Professional development goals. Balance goals. Health goals. If money were no object, what would you really like to do?

  • I would like to own a small production house, creating X content for X audience.
  • I would like to be a consultant in policy for municipal government.
  • I want to produce a YouTube series showcasing…(insert favourite subject!)
  • I would like to coach young professionals and help them build successful careers.
  • I want to build my knowledge of/take a course in X.
  • etc…

Then, send your list to us, and we’ll show you how to prioritize each of your goals into short-, mid- and long-term themes, identify any professional development you need to get there, and help you build a schedule and timeline for each of your goals.

The sooner you can identify your career goals, the faster we can help you realize them!

WIFT Interview Seminar

We customize training seminars specifically for media professionals. We give you the straight goods on the latest workforce trends, and help you be more competitive in the job market. mI’s seminars are designed for media professionals to help them plan and action meaningful careers. mI’s  signature seminars include:

Career Essentials: It’s All About Your Plan and Your Brand: provides talent in all areas of screen-based media with practical ways to evaluate their skills, help them determine and articulate short-, mid-, and long-term goals, and begin establishing their personal brand, be it for staff or freelance jobs. Then, we build on the goals process by reviewing best practices for all marketing tools required including:  CV/resume, bio, references, social media profiles and internet presence, cover emails/letters, business cards, work samples and email signatures. We look at ways to help job seekers “position” and “package” themselves to their best advantage, give them practical tips on effective networking, we address any skills shortages or experience gaps they may have, and teach participants how to continuously build their brand and their “pitch” to better support their professional goals.

Career Activism: How to Access the Hidden Job Market: This seminar is designed to teach participants how to properly research and access the “hidden job market”. We teach participants how to target companies properly, how to match their skills to a given business unit and company mandate, how to effectively approach hiring managers for consideration on their team, and how to make a strong business case for their candidacy. We’ll show them easy, practical ways to chart an effective job search, develop job leads through their professional networks, and most importantly, they will learn how to assess if they have what it takes to be shortlisted for a given job. Finally, we’ll give participants some practical direction on how to call, email and follow-up properly on job leads, and how to get in front of the right decision-maker, at the right time, for the right reasons.

Mastering the Interview:  Are your interview skills ready to be put to the test? It pays to prepare! This presentation is designed to help job seekers prepare to compete more strongly than their peers. Candidates are taught how to conduct thorough research for critical interviews, and are shown what to expect during the first and second round interview processes. We teach candidates how to build a “business case” for their candidacy and “make and justify their ask” to ensure the employers clearly know why they would be the best candidate for the job. Finally, job seekers are taught how to wrap up and take control of next steps and follow-ups, so as not to make any last minute blunders and lose an opportunity. This seminar will introduce best practices to truly stand out in the interview process, to properly manage follow-ups, and to lead you towards receiving the offer.

Negotiating Your Salary: Salary negotiation can be daunting — but when you know your value and do your research, you can be much more successful in getting what you want. This seminar is designed to help candidates determine “fair market value” for a given position, and to approach negotiating confidently with the process in perspective, and with realistic expectations. We teach candidates to establish their objectives, assess their personal style, and to conduct the compensation conversation in a practical way. We help individuals determine their baseline salaries and/or rates and deal points, and teach them how to justify their “ask”. Finally, we teach candidates to close the deal, and make a positioning statement for leaving the former employer, and an entry strategy to ensure success in the new job!

Smart Start: How to Start Your Business in Film, Television & Digital Media:  Starting a freelance business can be an exhilarating and rewarding option, provided you have the right tools and guidance. SMART START will teach you how to set up your own shop and brand in a single day; what marketing tools you need to promote your product; how to develop business market channels and manage business development cycles; how to use the power of the internet to market your new venture; how to get those crucial face to face meetings with clients and close the sale.
